At Wiply, we believe in fostering a safe and enjoyable environment for all our users. A key part of this commitment is ensuring that content inappropriate for younger audiences is not readily visible to them. That’s why we’ve introduced the “Adult Content” flag, allowing you to easily mark your posts and help our algorithms hide them from users under 18.
You’ll find this option by clicking the wheel button (Options) below your post and selecting “Adult Content – Share your post as adult content.”
But how do you decide if your video or photo should be flagged as “Adult Content”? We understand that “adult” can be a subjective term, and we don’t want to be overly strict. However, to maintain a safe platform, we need to establish some basic guidelines.
Our Golden Rule: If you are unsure, mark it adult anyway.
This simple principle is your best guide. When in doubt, err on the side of caution. It’s far better to restrict access to a borderline post than to accidentally expose a minor to something they shouldn’t see.
Beyond the golden rule, here are some basic considerations to help you decide:
Consider Marking Your Content as “Adult” if it Contains:
- Nudity or Sexually Suggestive Content: This includes full or partial nudity, revealing clothing in a suggestive context, or any imagery that is explicitly sexual or implies sexual acts. This is probably the most straightforward category.
- Graphic Violence: While not directly sexual, content depicting realistic or graphic violence, gore, or disturbing injury can be highly inappropriate for younger viewers. Think about the impact on a developing mind.
- Illegal or Regulated Activities: Content that promotes, glorifies, or depicts illegal activities (e.g., drug use, illegal weapons) or regulated substances (e.g., excessive alcohol consumption in a way that encourages abuse) should generally be flagged.
- Strong, Persistent, or Graphic Language: While occasional strong language might be acceptable in some contexts, posts that feature pervasive, highly offensive, or graphic language as a central theme should be considered for flagging.
- Self-Harm or Extremely Disturbing Themes: Any content that glorifies, depicts, or encourages self-harm, suicide, or extremely disturbing psychological themes should absolutely be marked as adult.
- Content That Could Be Exploitative: This is a broad category, but if your content could be interpreted as exploitative, degrading, or abusive towards any individual or group, it should be flagged.
What We Generally DO NOT Consider “Adult Content” (unless other factors apply):
- Artistic nudity presented in a non-sexual context (e.g., classical sculpture, life drawing) – however, if unsure, still flag it.
- Educational or documentary content about sensitive topics, presented responsibly and without gratuitous imagery.
- News coverage of events, even if they include violence, as long as it’s not sensationalized or designed to shock.
How Wiply Helps (and Why Your Help is Still Crucial):
At Wiply, we also leverage advanced Artificial Intelligence Vision models to identify and blur adult images automatically. This is part of our commitment to safety.
However, we do not delete content simply because it’s flagged as adult. Our core policy is that we all have to be responsible for our own content, and we strongly believe in warning people before taking more drastic action. This approach is possible because we have a growing community of users who consistently respect our rules and contribute to a safe and responsible environment.
Why is Your Self-Tagging Important?
Even with our AI, your responsible tagging helps us immensely:
- Protect Minors: Your primary tagging helps us ensure that children and teenagers are shielded from content that could be harmful, disturbing, or inappropriate for their age.
- Maintain Platform Integrity: It ensures that Wiply remains a welcoming and respectable space for all our users.
- Enhance AI Accuracy: Your manual flags help train and improve our AI models, making them even more effective at identifying and handling sensitive content.
- Empower User Choice: By pre-flagging, you give users a heads-up, allowing them to decide if they want to view potentially sensitive material.
In summary, when you’re about to post, take a moment to consider your audience. If there’s even a slight chance your content might be unsuitable for someone under 18, click that “Adult Content” flag. Your active participation in this process, alongside our AI, helps us build a better and safer community for everyone.
Thank you for being a responsible member of Wiply!
